My apologies for the title, but this article is going to be about a YouTube video. If you're not interested in watching it or don't have any idea what the heck "Crazy Frog Axel F 1080p 11" means, then best to stop reading now, because I'm going to be talking about it for a while. In the 1990s there was this song called "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer and featuring Gregor Hildebrand on drums and vocals and Giorgio Moroder on keyboards and synthesizers. It had an iconic sound with its heavily filtered drums that became known as "The Crazy Frog Drum Loop". Everyone and their dog knew that song and for a long time it was the only known sound to come out of the other side of a CB radio. Unfortunately, once other musical tools such as MIDI and samplers began getting developed, this song's popularity began to dwindle as it became possible to create similar sounds with software. It still remained as a "trademarked" track however, so no one worried too much about copyright infringement until this video surfaced on YouTube in 2005: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=LwXc92Up3Vk It is a sad story how this video came to exist. It appears to have been created using footage from two separate songs - "Axel F" and "House of House", both recorded by Harold Faltermeyer way back in 1984. Note that, throughout the entire video, the sound of the drums don't change once. The song starts off with an introduction which then disappears into the background of the next sequence, but you can just about hear what sounds like a drum machine or something similar. I found out about this via YouTube's message boards over at Something Awful, where some people were discussing it . There are also threads over at the Faltermeyer forum. It all got pretty heated in both places when one forum user by the name of "mewsoft" posted the video, claiming that Faltermeyer actually _endorsed_ it in an interview. The full interview can be found online here . The relevant excerpt is as follows: Interviewer: "And I think also in special effect terms, what was very impressive with Axel F were the drums, which somehow actually became a sort of signature sound for 80's pop music and used on quite a lot of tracks, but was that just you jamming along and then happy with the sound?" Harold Faltermeyer: "No not really. That's actually the result of a recording, where I wanted to keep all the parts, which I think made it interesting. The drums were recorded by Gregor Hildebrand who was at that time my drummer, but he didn't take part in this track. He also played with The Buggles on 'Video Killed the Radio Star'. So what really happened here? We can take Faltermeyer at his word here that he means what he says about not just sampling it outright, but maybe something more sinister is at play. There were other songs back then that sampled the drum loop directly.
